Jamdani Sarees

Sulaiman, a 9th-century Arab traveler, wrote of cotton fabrics made in the kingdom of Rahmi (former undivided Bengal) which were so fine they could pass through a signet ring. Around the 12th century, due to Islamic influences, the fabric infused countless motifs and colors. It was during Akbar's reign that the art blossomed into its most exquisite form of flowered muslin, Jamdani. Pure jamdani saree is a discontinuous weft technique of weaving and can be defined as the art of fine ‘Parsi Gara' done on the loom. Designs range from “butidar” (wherein the entire sari is dispersed with florals), the “tercha” (diagonally striped florals), or “jhalar” (a network of floral motifs). This art has traveled far beyond its birthplace—Dhaka, Bangladesh (erstwhile undivided Bengal). We can find the finest Jamdani weavers in West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh.
